Building Prague

Lots of cities are known for their great architecture, and Prague certainly is no exception. What makes Prague unique, though, is its (sometimes strange) mixture of architectural styles.

It’s no joke to say that the city has been around for a long time – the part of Prague known as “New Town” was begun in the 14th century – and so, needless to say, it’s undergone a lot of reconstruction.

One of the most striking contrasts, I think, occurs between Prague’s graceful old architecture and the buildings that come from the Communist era; you get classically beautiful edifices like the National Theater, and, at the same time, the skyline is dominated by something like the TV Tower.

These are just two examples of many that give insight into the city’s diverse character. After all, what speaks louder for Prague’s history and spirit than one building, covered in winged statues, and another nearby, covered in giant, crawling babies?
