Am I really ready to be away for five months?
If this is your first time knowing of my existence, hiiii! My name is Gladys, I am a third-year student at Georgetown University and I am so glad to have you onboard.
Just under a year ago I was speaking to one of my study abroad advisor about where I wanted to go abroad.
I asked myself, “Where could you possibly see yourself for the next five months, Gladys? What country would you like to explore?”
Then my advisor said the magical words, “Singapore” and I was immediately sold no further questions asked. The only impressions I have of Singapore till this day is from the three times I watched the film ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ and the stories my friend shared with me about her time there during her gap year. Singapore to me is more than the pretty garden lights and Marina Bay Sands (even though these aren’t bad things at all, they are great actually), Singapore signifies the journey I did not see coming but I knew I needed if that makes sense. For the next five months, I have no idea what lays ahead of me, the kind of food I will eat, the friends I will make, the places I will rest at night or even how my professors will be.
But I do know some things for sure, I know that God will never take me anywhere if he didn’t have a plan. I know that I will experience life in a way I have never before. I know that I will grow spiritually, emotionally, professionally, personally, socially, and every other lly’s there are. I know that I use to be really scared about leaving but I also know that fear and faith cannot exist together. I know that I will be tested. Lastly but most importantly, I know that God is with me.
So yeah, I can keep talking about my feelings and nervousness but I think it’s better to stop here and get excited instead! These next five months will be glorious and this I know for sure, I can feel it deep down in my bones.
