I seem to once again find myself heading east. Though I spent last semester in Russia, I feel strangely unprepared to go to Hungary. At least with Russia I knew some of the language, whereas Hungarian is still more than incomprehensible. The “Learn Hungarian on the Airplane” CD that my Dad found for me is not exactly helpful beyond the very basics. Though the basics are useful, they can only take you so far. It is more than a little strange to think that in a few months I might have some sort of understanding of this very foreign tongue. By the end of the semester, my program claims that I will have a “mastery of survival Hungarian.” Well, I hope that is true.
Even if the language is a little intimidating, I am looking forward to many other aspects of Hungarian culture, especially the food. Over the last few months I have heard that everything in Hungary is delicious. Even a precursory glance at the Hungarian Cuisine article on Wikipedia has demonstrated to me that, without a doubt, Hungary will be full of excellent eating opportunities. Also, a quick Google search led to the discovery of this blog — http://thehungariangirl.com/ — which has become quite distracting for me as I write this post.
Another fabulous aspect of Hungary is the fact that it is in the middle of a part of the world that I find absolutely and completely fascinating. It is surrounded by Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, and Austria. It will be impossible for me not to travel into at least a few of these countries. Hopefully, I will be able to make it to the beautiful beaches on the Dalmatian Coast of Croatia or explore Poland to the North. My ultimate goal, however, is to go to all these bordering nations. We shall see how that goes, considering that I have no Spring Break this year… only two three day weekends.
Without a doubt, Hungary will be quite a different experience when compared to Russia. The program is smaller, more intimate. The classes, on the other hand, will be larger and will consist of a large group of international students, not only Americans. I will be living with Hungarians, but instead of in a home stay, I will have a window into what it is like to be a real Hungarian college student by living in a dorm with four roommates and a shared bathroom. I hope my good luck with roommates continues to prosper; however, by saying that I have probably just cursed myself. Oops.
Regardless of future roommates or the prospect of a completely new language, I am beyond excited to leave this continent again and have some truly new Hungarian adventures!
