Religiosity

Now, this isn’t the first time I’ve lived with a Muslim family. It is, in fact, the fourth. However, I’m still a little overwhelmed by the all-the-time religiousness of everything here. I thought it was extreme in Senegal. I’m surprised there’s even a word for “secular” in the Arabic language.

Pictures may be better than words here. This is my host mother, sitting with her sister.

The “niqaab,” a full face veil, is not required but shows piety and is very common for women in my neighborhood.

This is a road sign, put up by the government, that says “Remember Allah.”

  • Wow! Your host family is very pious. Do you ever feel odd because you don’t wear the veil there? I remember when I went to Morocco, I felt awkward when I first got there because I wasn’t wearing the hijab like every other woman. Keep us posted on what’s going on! 🙂
